Brief description of what services your organisation offers:
We at Solent NHS Trust provide a quality dental service for all ages who may require a more specialised approach to their care and are unable to receive this in a General Dental Practice. The Special Care Dental Service provides dental care for children and adults who have special needs, including those with a physical, sensory, intellectual, mental, medical, emotional or social impairment or disability or a combination of these which may prevent them from accessing care through the General Dental Services. It also provides specialist occasional care, supporting care in general dental practice by providing a single or staged course of treatment
 
Where the service is based:
There are 2 specialist dental services in Portsmouth at the Somerstown Family Hub and Eastney Health Centre.
Patients requiring a general anaesthetic following assessment will be treated at hospital locations including: - Southampton General Hospital, Queen Alexandra Hospital (Poswillo Dental Centre), Royal Hampshire County Hospital Winchester and North Hampshire Hospital Basingstoke.
For those who are housebound or frail elderly people, a domiciliary service can be provided
 
What the organisation provides - types of interventions and support:
Solent NHS Trust Special Care Dental Service provides routine dental care for children and adults who have a special need including those with a physical, sensory, intellectual mental, medical, emotional or social impairment or disability or a combination of these that prevent them from accessing care through the General Dental Services.  A Dental Passport is available that enables patients with learning disabilities to share information with the dental team such as their health and health difficulties, likes and dislikes, and any medication that they may be on.  This helps the dental team to have a more complete picture of an individual's life and will ensure a positive experience and outcome. Eligibility Criteria:
This includes children with:
Learning disabilities
Severe mental health problems
Behavioural / management problems 
Child protection issues or looked after children 
Medical special needs
Severe physical disabilities
Autistic spectrum disorders
Treatment required as a result of serious dental trauma if not manageable in general practice
Extensive decay in multiple teeth in more than one quadrant where treatment has proved unsuccessful under local anaesthesia.
To be seen within our service you must be registered with a Hampshire General Medical Practitioner (GP)
 
Quality standards and expected outcomes for children and young people and their families accessing your services:
The Special Care Dental Service provides dental care for children and adults who have a special need. It also provides specialist occasional care, supporting care in general dental practice by providing a single or staged course of treatment. Patients referred for occasional care will usually be seen for a course of treatment and then discharged back to the General Dental Services unless it is necessary for continuing care to be provided in this service because of the patient’s special need or disability
 
How can this service be accessed?
A referral can be made to the Special Care Dental Service, by Dentists, Doctors, any other Health or Social Care Professional, voluntary organisations and community groups, education/special schools, families, and carers. To be seen within our service the patient must be registered with a Hampshire General Medical Practitioner (GP)
