All early years settings are expected to identify a SENCO (Special Education Needs Co-Ordinator) or there may be an INCO (Inclusion Co-Ordinator).  They will talk to you about your child's needs and, with you, plan how they can best support your child's learning and development. This could include:

  • Writing a SEND support plan which will detail specific strategies and targets your child will work towards and how they will be monitored by the setting
  • Referral to an external agency e.g. Speech and Language Therapist (SALT)
  • Initiating an Education, Health Care Plan (EHCP)

It is their responsibility to work in partnership with you, co-ordinate support for your child in the setting and to liaise with other professionals.

The setting SENCO is supported by the Local Authority 'Area Inclusion Coordinator' who is there to offer support and guidance and to ensure that your child's needs are being met.

You should expect that each and every setting in Portsmouth will meet with you to discuss your child's specific needs. In most cases the setting should be able to offer varying levels of additional support, either directly or with some additional outside help. In some cases, the setting may not be able to; for example some settings are based in old Victorian houses that cannot be altered to make them more accessible.

The setting will support the transition for your child between settings and on to school. Information and relevant plans will be shared so that the receiving provider can ensure the needs of your child are met.
